On our 3rd day in Costa Rica we went to Playa Avellana which is just a little north of the beach we were at the day before, Playa Negra. You can also see my earlier post if you want to see where we stayed or if you are interested in a great place to stay here.
Here is where Playa Avellana is on the map (circled in red):
This is what I wrote in my journal:
July 10, 2011
Today we woke up and Molly made us a Costa Rican breakfast with eggs, beans and rice, plantation smoothies and fried cheese. Then Molly and Andre took us to Playa Avellana. We paid a guy approximately $2.00 to watch our car in a field that looked like it had cows in it earlier and went to the beach where Molly and Andre taught Ethan, Dave and Sensi how to do some surfing. We played in the water for a few hours and did some boogie boarding, body surfing and diving into waves. The sand was more of a typical white on this beach and had a lot of cone type shells. There were a lot of huge rocks in the water that kept being revealed more and more as the tide went out. It was a beautiful day. Then we went to Lola’s Restaurant, named after the original 800 lb. pig that the owners kept there. Now they have another HUGE pig, at least 800 lbs. if not bigger, named Lolita. Lolita freely roams around the restaurant and is slightly frightening when she gets really close! The restaurant was great…the service was excellent and the food was really good. They had great pizzas and the kids had these tasty watermelon juice drinks. Lola’s was right on the beach…our table and chairs were in the sand. Then we went back to Molly’s and on the way Molly and Andre lost a surf board off of their roof of their car. They had to stop to pick it up off the side of the gravel road. When we got back, we saw one of Molly’s horses had gotten out of its stable so we had to shut the gate to the house so it couldn’t get out, Molly said a wire fell down on the fence. Andre’s niece from Switzerland got here today. The kids went swimming and then Molly took Dave an Sensi horseback riding on one of her horses. They had a great time. Sensi even rode Molly’s horse sitting backwards. Then Molly made us a great spaghetti dinner.
The kids want to move here.
Lola’s Restaurant at Playa Avellana is an excellent beach restaurant with a huge pig mascot named Lolita who is the predecessor to the original 800 pound pig, Lola, who the restaurant is originally named after.
Since I don’t feel like I got the whole effect of Playa Avellana and Lola’s in my photos, below are more photos from TripAdvisor. You can also read more about Playa Avellana and Lola’s here.
