New Bamboo Wood Floor- Progress-1

My husband and I installed the bamboo wood floors in our dining room and living room and they look so nice!  Originally, we planned on doing it all together, but then we found out we were expecting a baby so I have let him take over most of the installation because I am TIRED and BLOATED.  Otherwise, I would be doing it with him 100%.  I have to say though, I am very impressed with his flooring skills, especially since it’s his first full wood floor.

This photo, right below, is of our daughter Crescentia in our dining room as it was with the really bad green carpet.  And to the right are my husband’s feet where he is tearing out the carpet.  Our dining room and living room are connected so it was really like starting in one huge room.  I was standing in the living room taking this photo of the dining room.

Tearing out the padding….

The picture below is a “before” photo of our living room carpet.  I let our 4 year old son, Bowie, help me paint the kitchen cabinets on it a couple of weeks ago because I knew it was all going in the trash.  It is so stained and shabby looking.  We do have 5 kids so carpets are an enemy!  5 kids + Carpets=  DISASTER.

Below is the living room with all of the carpet removed and most of the padding removed.

The padding is stapled down with hundreds of staples which have to be removed.

The photo below shows the tack strips that are around the edge of every wall.  These strips are what the carpet is tacked into.  All of these have to be removed.  I like to use a putty knife and a screw driver to rip them out.

This needle nose pliers works really well for pulling out staples and carpet chunks.

My husband carefully removed all of the trim because we are trying to salvage it to reuse.  Buying all new trim would really add to the expense so we opted to keep the old if possible.  Some of it did crack and is not able to be repaired so those pieces will have to be replaced.

This small crow bar below is great for removing trim.  It’s helps to have two prying tools to loosen one end and then a few feet down the trim start prying out a second area.

This photo just shows how the padding was under the carpet.

Photo of the first piece of bamboo installed!  We decided, after a lot of talking with people, that the easiest way to do the stapling down would be with an air compressor.  We bought 1 and 1/2 inch staples.  My husband puts a staple about every 8 inches.  No two staples can be closer than 3 inches apart.

  1. Wow! Nothing like getting rid of old dirty carpet and replacing it with shiny new wood floors. Such a great transformation. Looks great flowing from the dining room right into the living room. Money well spent I’d say. Good job!
